The History of Tylon & Tylonproducts
When I was young; I always had some fascination with dinosaurs; Velociraptors to be exact. I can recall an old video game I adored; where you were a raptor like character fighting other dinosaurs. I had the raptor action figures, games and everything else in between. I was so obsessed- when I was in roughly 2nd to 3rd grade; I created my very first character (who was indeed a Raptor) named Tylon.
As time went on- I continued to evolve Tylon as you could say. She went from being this dinosaur with spikes to a dinosaur with wings, then finally to her fluffy multicolored mane that I still keep with her today.
When I reached 7th-8th grade I started to use the name Tylon / Tylonproducts to watermark all of my art. I eventually purchased this domain as a result of my dedication to my love for art. I coded Tylonproducts originally with iframes way back in the day and I started to post my illustrations, art and characters.
It remained that way up until College. I was recommended to buy a domain name which reflected my “professional name” rather than a name that had “no relation” to my industry or didn’t directly represent me as a person. So I purchased kristinasavasta.com to upload my career based work and left Tylonproducts as a blog/ fun community to post all the stuff I enjoyed to do on the side.
So it remained that way up until after I graduated. Entering the working world with not much luck (and many interviews later); I wanted to find a way to make a little money on the site to put towards my gigantic loans. Years previously (through college) I started sewing- making stuffed animals of strange animals and creatures I always adored. Falling in love with the endangered Axolotl; I made it my mission to sew Axolotls as I developed a fascination and obsession with their unique, whimsical looks. Before I knew it- I had people actually wanting to buy my stuffed animals online! I came in contact with Meghan (the founder of Lotllove- a pending non profit organization dedicated to raising awareness about the axolotl) who really inspired me to continue with my love for axolotls and sewing them. To top it off- Meghan and those supporters of Lotllove sent me Vicious, my axolotl who really pushed everything into full gear and became a constant inspiration and reminder for not only raising awareness through stuffed animals, art, design & media- but also educating individuals about how incredible axolotls really are.
January 2013 I decided I would start selling my stuff for real. I had about three years experience with sewing- some great connections because of it- and a love for animals that people had no idea even existed. I put up all my stuffed axolotls online- and every single one of them sold. I heard incredible stories from people, met some incredible people along the way- and realized there was so much more to this than just “making the money to pay off my loans”. Tylonproducts went from being my hobby to being a foundation for something so much more than I ever thought it could possibly be.
I ended up with my current job in February; and from there- continued to work with Tylonproducts on the side. When I wasn’t working; I was at home sewing- developing ideas and more products. My family continued to help me out; and my friend even started to participate by helping out with photos. Eventually- I was getting so many requests for stuffed animals; I could not keep up with it on my free time. I was very fortunate to have come in contact with Desi (who is now a member of the Tylonproducts family) who was interested in helping me out sewing. Just thinking of how this all started years ago and how far it has come- has truly been an incredible experience for me. To know here I am- almost 23 years old, a college graduate with a Bachelors degree, full time job and a small craft business has truly been an achievement I never would have seen coming when starting all of this.
To think it all started in 3rd grade with me drawing a character and showing off my love for art years to come.
This year marks a very important growth in my work and Tylonproducts. Some new members joined the Tylonproducts family, an online store was opened- and I will be participating in my first ever craft fair(s) selling some of these products and crafts I love to make. It has been a year of growth, networking and development in both a professional and personal aspect.
I wanted to share all of this to show that you never know what might become of doing something you love or enjoy- even if it is something you do on the side and enjoy as your hobby. Sometimes you never know what will become of something- and sometimes those dreams will become your reality one day. While Tylonproducts is indeed small and might seem to some as insignificant- it is something I feel has come a long ways and I hope will continue to go on forward. To hear the stories and read the emails and thoughts I get day to day is truly incredible to hear how a stuffed animal could impact someone in such a way, or perhaps an inspired individual who wants to give ideas for their favorite animal to be turned into a plush creation has really made Tylonproducts so much more than just a name. It is the people, the supporters, the customers and members/ Tylonproducts family who makes it what it is.
So I thank everybody for taking the time to buy a stuffed animal/ craft, to comment in the blog and for sending me an email with your ideas.
Thank you all! Seeing this post is also near thanksgiving- to all those who celebrate it- Happy Thanksgiving!
